Getting to Jungle Tide

Jungle Tide is about thirty five minutes’ drive from Kandy. Our drivers can pick you up from Kandy train station, the bus station, the airport or from your previous hotel. It is much better to arrive in the daylight, the views on the way up from Kandy are magnificent, as are the sunsets at Jungle Tide. So while we take check-ins up to 7pm (and later if necessary by prior agreement) you should try to get here by 5pm at the latest. If you are using Google maps to find Jungle Tide, ensure that you or your driver checks that the route given is “via Mount Royal Road”. Any other route may seem shorter but will be impassable.

You can reach the village of Uduwela, one kilometre from Jungle Tide, by bus from Kandy (no. 655 from Clock Tower bus stand) but you will then have to walk the rest of the way unless you have made a prior arrangement with us for a tuk-tuk. The bus is very cheap, but also very crowded and not recommended if you have baggage.

Things to do on site

Jungle Tide is a great place to relax, gaze at the mountains and do nothing!

But if you want something more, we certainly have it.

A large (12m x 6m) swimming pool; a hectare of gardens with a stream to paddle in; outdoor lawn games including badminton and a basketball hoop; hens to feed and eggs to collect; shelves full of indoor games; a library and free book exchange.

And, of course, watching the birds from the comfort of a veranda chair. 44 species have been identified in our garden. You may also see monkeys, mongooses, deer and other animals in the gardens. At night there are fireflies and small bats, and on clear nights more stars than you can count. You might see a family of porcupines, or a polecat.

Martin, our housekeeper, will take you for a walk around the nearby village of Uduwela and show you places of interest. And you can learn the secrets of Sri Lankan cookery from Rani, who we think is the best cook in the island. There is a small charge for these activities, 50% of which goes direct to Martin or Rani.

If you book in advance you can also have massages and yoga sessions with the reliable and expert teachers that we use.

The TEA Project

TEA stands for Training, Empowerment, Awareness and this local project is a charity we are pleased to support in its work with local tea pickers and their children. If arranged with us in advance you can visit the project’s educational centre and see for yourself the valuable work it is doing with some of the poorest people in Sri Lanka. Other than your transport costs there is no charge from Jungle Tide, but please donate to the project directly. www.theteaproject.org
